Meralco Advances Sustainable Grid Infrastructure

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) advances its Greening the Network program, focusing on infrastructure upgrades for cleaner energy. Since 2022, the utility company has replaced nearly 60,000 distribution transformers with units using natural ester oil. This initiative supports sustainable grid technologies and aligns with global environmental goals. Meralco also transitions to lithium iron phosphate batteries and manages sulfur hexafluoride emissions, reporting a 0.30% leakage rate. The company replaced over 21,000 wooden poles with concrete and steel alternatives. Biodegradable meter bags now reduce plastic waste. Meralco plans to integrate 729 MW of renewable capacity by 2024, scaling to 1.3 GW by 2027.
