Preem's Redefine HVO100 First Liquid Fuel to Earn Nordic Swan Ecolabel

Preem's Redefine HVO100 is the first liquid fuel to achieve the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, meeting the stringent criteria introduced in 2022. This fuel is derived from residual products and offers a substantial reduction in its climate footprint compared to conventional diesel. Established by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1989, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel is a prominent environmental certification recognized by 97% of Nordic residents. To earn this distinction, Preem’s HVO100 demonstrably reduced greenhouse gas emissions by at least 75% compared to fossil fuel alternatives, utilized sustainable and traceable raw materials, and prohibited the use of palm oil. Anna Linusson, CEO of Miljömärkning Sverige, the organization administering the label, expressed hope that this certification will encourage broader industry advancement toward sustainable practices. Preem produces HVO100 at its Gothenburg refinery by converting residual materials such as tall oil, animal fats, and food waste. The resulting fuel shares the same chemical composition as traditional diesel, enabling its use in most diesel engines without requiring modifications. According to Preem, Redefine HVO100 can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% compared to conventional diesel, offering a straightforward solution for lowering emissions from existing vehicle fleets.
