Alingsås-based Swedish subcontractor Nybergs Svets has secured its first export order outside the Nordic region, supplying steel structures for a new hospital in Guyana. This contract represents a significant expansion for the company, driven by a downturn in the Swedish construction sector.
Nybergs Svets, employing approximately 50 people and established in 1914, will provide 1,500 tons of steel structures for the modern general hospital in New Amsterdam. The facility will feature 230 beds, three new operating rooms, advanced X-ray technology, laboratories, and a pharmacy. CEO Patrik Wallin views exporting as "a natural next step in widening our business."
The opportunity arose through an inquiry from Elof Hansson International AB, now part of Serneke International Group, which sought Swedish suppliers to facilitate financing options via the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN) and the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK). An advance payment from the developer, coupled with a guarantee from EKN, supported the viability of the agreement for Nybergs Svets.
According to Wallin, this project provides valuable experience for future international ventures. Nybergs Svets aims to capitalize on Guyana’s burgeoning economy, described by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the world's fastest-growing in recent years, as it diversifies beyond its traditional Swedish market for steel constructions used in schools, sports halls, and industrial facilities.
