Faced with a contraction in the Swedish construction market, Alingsås-based subcontractor Nybergs Svets has secured its first export order outside the Nordic region. The company will supply 1,500 tons of steel for a hospital construction project in Guyana.
Nybergs Svets, established in 1914 and employing approximately 50 people, has historically focused on domestic projects, providing structural steel components for schools and industrial facilities. CEO Patrik Wallin characterized the export venture as "a natural next step in widening our business." The contract entails providing steel beams for a new, 230-bed general hospital in New Amsterdam, Guyana. Guyana has recently been identified by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as one of the world's fastest-growing economies. The hospital will feature three operating theaters, advanced X-ray technology, laboratories, and a pharmacy.
The opportunity originated from a request by Elof Hansson International AB (now part of Serneke International Group), seeking Swedish suppliers to enable advantageous project financing. The agreement was financially facilitated for Nybergs Svets through an advance payment from the developer and a guarantee from the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN). The Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK) also participated in the financing structure.
This project represents a significant achievement for Nybergs Svets, whose prior export activity was limited to smaller engagements in Norway several years ago. Mr. Wallin described the venture as "very exciting" and affirmed that the company now possesses the requisite experience to pursue similar large-scale projects going forward.
