Preem's HVO100 Becomes First Liquid Fuel with Nordic Swan Ecolabel

Preem's Redefine HVO100 fuel has reached a significant milestone, becoming the first liquid fuel to earn the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. This certification validates its compliance with rigorous environmental standards, including a minimum 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil alternatives. The fuel also utilizes sustainable and traceable raw materials, with a strict prohibition on palm oil. Produced at Preem's Gothenburg refinery, Redefine HVO100 is derived from waste products such as tall oil, animal fats, and food waste. Despite its origin, the fuel is chemically similar to traditional diesel, enabling its use in most diesel engines without requiring vehicle modifications. Preem's data suggests this fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% when compared to conventional diesel. Anna Linusson, CEO of Miljömärkning Sverige, the organization overseeing the Nordic Swan label, expressed optimism that this achievement will encourage wider sustainability initiatives throughout the industry. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel, established in 1989, is a respected symbol of environmental responsibility in the Nordic region, recognizing products and services with a reduced environmental impact. Daniel Granquist, Preem's business developer for HVO100, noted that the updated ecolabel criteria were introduced in 2022. Preem's fuel successfully met these new standards this spring.
