Swedish subcontractor Nybergs Svets has secured a significant export order outside the Nordic region, supplying 1,500 tons of steel structures for a hospital construction project in Guyana. This marks the Alingsås-based company's first major international venture beyond its established Nordic markets. The move is a strategic response to the current downturn in the Swedish construction industry.
Nybergs Svets, established in 1914 and employing approximately 50 people, has traditionally provided steel pillars, beams, and structures for domestic projects, including schools, sports halls, and industrial facilities. The current order involves supplying materials for a state-of-the-art 230-bed general hospital under construction in New Amsterdam, Guyana, a nation recognized by the IMF as having the world's fastest-growing economy. The completed hospital will feature three new operating rooms, advanced X-ray solutions, laboratories, and a pharmacy.
The opportunity originated from an inquiry by Elof Hansson International AB (now part of Serneke International Group), which sought Swedish suppliers for the hospital project to facilitate favorable financing through the Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN) and the Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK). Nybergs Svets was able to accept the order due to a financial guarantee from EKN and an advance payment from the developer.
CEO Patrik Wallin views this project as a pivotal achievement for the company. He noted that while Nybergs Svets has historically focused on domestic projects with limited past export experience, the successful completion of this project positions the company to pursue similar international opportunities in the future.
