Preem's Redefine HVO100 First Liquid Fuel with Nordic Swan Ecolabel

Preem's Redefine HVO100 has reached a significant milestone, becoming the first liquid fuel to earn the Svanen (Nordic Swan) ecolabel. This prestigious certification was awarded this spring under new, more rigorous criteria introduced in 2022. The fuel, which visually resembles traditional diesel, is produced from residual products, representing a key advancement in sustainable transportation solutions. Established in 1989, the Svanen label denotes a reduced environmental impact and enjoys widespread recognition, with 97% of the Nordic population familiar with it. Anna Linusson, CEO of Miljömärkning Sverige, the organization overseeing the label, emphasized that qualifying fuels must meet demanding standards. These include demonstrating at least a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel alternatives, utilizing sustainable and traceable raw materials, and explicitly excluding unsustainable sources such as palm oil. Manufactured at Preem's Gothenburg refinery, Redefine HVO100 is produced by converting waste materials like tall oil, animal fats, and food waste into a chemically identical diesel alternative. This allows for direct use in the majority of diesel vehicles without requiring any modifications. The fuel significantly lowers the climate footprint, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% when compared to conventional diesel. Ms. Linusson expressed optimism that this certification will serve as a catalyst for broader industry transformation, stating, "The hope is that the entire industry will shift."
