Preem's HVO100 First Liquid Fuel to Earn Nordic Swan Ecolabel

Preem's Redefine HVO100 has become the first liquid fuel to earn the prestigious Nordic Swan Ecolabel, according to Dagens Industri. This advancement in sustainable fuels for the Nordic region is notable, as the product, which appears identical to conventional diesel at the pump, is manufactured from residual materials. The Nordic Swan label, established in 1989, is widely recognized, with 97% of Nordic citizens aware of its significance in indicating a product's reduced environmental impact. The newly implemented, rigorous criteria for the Swan label, introduced in Spring 2022, mandate that fuels must achieve greenhouse gas emissions at least 75% lower than fossil alternatives. Additionally, raw materials must be sustainable and traceable, with a ban on palm oil. Anna Linusson, CEO of Miljömärkning Sverige, expressed the hope that the entire industry will embrace these standards. Preem manufactures Redefine HVO100 at its Gothenburg refinery. The process involves refining residual materials such as tall oil, animal fats, and food waste. Chemically, this biofuel is identical to traditional diesel, allowing it to be used in most diesel engines without any modifications. This offers a substantial reduction in a vehicle's climate footprint. Preem's HVO100 lowers greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% compared to standard diesel and can be directly utilized in the majority of existing diesel vehicles.
