Reuters: Renewable Energy Access Key to Transforming Global Food Systems

According to a Reuters report, transitioning global food systems towards sustainability, particularly in Africa, is critical and relies on the adoption of renewable energy sources. This transition is especially urgent in the lead-up to COP30. Current agricultural and food systems contribute significantly to environmental challenges, accounting for approximately one-third of greenhouse gas emissions and 70% of freshwater consumption. With Africa's population projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, the shift to regenerative farming practices, which inherently increases energy demands, necessitates renewable energy solutions. Solar-powered irrigation, now economically competitive with diesel alternatives, and biogas systems that convert farm waste into both fertilizer and clean energy are crucial components of this transition.
